Amongst the Motion Pictures which adapted from Classic Literatures,<The Dream of Red Mansion> is one of the most sought-after works. Based on the original novel, the1989edition of its movie with six chapters and eight episodes have demonstrated a delicate and enriched drama and strong artistic appeal. Within this production, Wang Ming, the new era composer of our country has contributed an even stronger appeal by his compositions of a series of vocal interludes, which presented a group of characteristic personalities from this novel. Among them, five vocal interludes are especially noteworthy as vivid exemplary works upon this quality. They are "The Funeral of Flowers","The Handkerchief Inscription","A Petite Song","The Blossom Appreciation" and "The Catkins". And these are the main subjects that were analyzed in details through this paper. The artistic effect of the five vocal interludes are presented by their verses, character personality, compositional technique and performing interpretation, respectively. The observation and analysis are directed through the angles and elements of:the merge of the poem and melody, the fuse of the verbal tone and vocal tune; the assembling of poetic rhythm and musical rhythm, as well as the artistically unique structural line of musical character, intervallic relationship and key scheme, etc. The interpretation of the five interludes is mainly discussed according to the original insights, artistic decisions and performing appeal from the author’s own performance, with the reference of the original soundtrack recorded by the vocalists such as Yu Wenhua.
