My most profound impression to China is that it is a great nation with long history and colorful ethnic music. In past thousands of years, Chinese people have created a large number of outstanding national music cultures, which include music of Han nationality and fifty-five ethnic minorities. In the long history of development, the music has formed its system, and has its due position in the world. In order to truly understand Chinese folk music, it is not enough to listen to some traditional music or sing a few Chinese folk songs. We should start from China’s history and culture, national characteristics and minority region to study as well as understand Chinese music. In this way, we can enter the real world of Chinese music and enjoy its music charm.Due to the efforts of many national minorities, diverse musical culture has formed in China. Music, music styles and performance skills of national minorities’representative musical instruments all have an immeasurable impact on the development of erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle). In addition, they all greatly enrich expressive force of erhu.Hundreds of years ago, erhu started appeared on the stage as a solo instrument. It was also introduced into the professional music teaching. Prior to this, erhu was used for civil sizhu music (traditional stringed and woodwind instruments) performance as well as the accompaniment of folk songs and opera. Erhu has achieved rapid development in the aspects of musical form and music creation. Composers have been helping various forms of music to vividly show on the stage. Therefore, as a Korean graduate student studying erhu in China, in my opinion, I should show my understanding to Chinese traditional music from the perspectives of Chinese history, time, and space, etc. I will try to utilize what I have learned and understand in China so as to traditional erhu music culture via playing erhu.
