With the wide spread of Chinese language, more and more international students adopt a variety of means to learn Chinese culture and Chinese calligraphy. Many universities and institutions at home and abroad begin to set up courses to teach Chinese culture and calligraphy.The writer in his essay adopted a variety of research methods to explore Chinese calligraphy teaching. He went through the existing reference documentations and made thorough comparison and analysis on the above basis. He also conducted research through observation on calligraphy class teaching, with the integration of his own experience in calligraphy teaching. In addition, he made interviews with experienced scholars as well as international students who had attended the class, to further explore the rules of calligraphy teaching, to find out answers to some questions.The essay contains six chapters. In the first chapter, to illustrate research significance, research methods and research development, meanwhile, set forth the author’s innovative proposition. In the second chapter, to construct and discuss international calligraphy teaching theory based on four theories, namely, the Chinese character cognition theory, the Chinese calligraphy acquisition theory, the calligraphy education theory and the calligraphy communication theory. In the third chapter, to analyze the status, the principles, the modules and the contents of calligraphy curriculum, In the fourth chapter, to compare the advantages and disadvantages of three series of textbooks for international calligraphy teaching, so as to put forward principles for calligraphy textbook writing and exercise book writing. In the fifth chapter, to summarize four principles for class teaching based on the author’s teaching experience and the interviews with scholars and students; to propose14methods in class teaching and organizing from macro and micro teaching perspectives separately.The most developed calligraphy education software, as well as the calligraphy teaching environment and teaching language were all discussed in this essay. In the sixth chapter, to propose the author’s suggestion for the future development of calligraphy teaching.To sum up, the author hopes that by means of learning Chinese calligraphy, the international students can achieve improvement in learning Chinese characters and Chinese culture. It is more expected that Chinese calligraphy art could reach out to the world and make contribution to the spread of the Chinese culture worldwide.
