AS a unique cultural phenomenon in modern China, opium has been richlydepicted in the works of fiction appearing at that time. This thesis focuses on theissue of opium description of the modern Chinese fiction in order to draw the outlineof its evolvement. The investigation starts from analyses of different genres of fiction,and reaches the discerning of different writing techniques, different aestheticstandards, and different cultural meanings. In the meantime, the dialysis of opiumdescription would revert the actual culture of opium abusing in modern China. Thispaper consists of three parts:Introductory part clarifies the significance of the theme, its present researchsituation, author’s basic view and research methods.Main part is formed by six chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction tothe evolvement of the opium description in the modern Chinese fiction. The secondchapter compares “Romantic dream” with “Flowers of Shanghai” in order to expoundthe connection of the record and style in Courtesan novel. The third chapter revealsthat there are many models in the plot of the works of Shixin novel, whose themeare usually persuading. The forth chapter shows the opium descriptions in works ofRebuking novel are always varied, weird and part. In the fifth chapter: these works ofOpium novel made achievements in opium criticism based on the tragic endings ofthese stories. The sixth chapter tries to make an analysis of the cultural value of theopium description.Conclusion part is a summary of the paper, which also summarizes the commonliterature characters of the opium description’s evolvement.
