From about the mid-8th century BC, Greece gradually came out of the"dark ages" into the civilized age called the Archaic age. The notable feature of thistime is the rise of the city-state, as well as large-scale overseas colonization and trade.Thus creating a amount of wealth and spiritual civilization, this also pave the way intothe Classical times to Greece in the5th century BC. However, conflicts and crises arebehind the prosperity of this time, competing for limited land resources, andinfighting in the overseas colonies and markets, leading to the Greek city-statesdeclined. In the4th century BC, almost all of the Greek city-states submited to therule of the Macedonian Empire.In this thesis, I will be focus on the Aegean island of Euboea, to research itshistory of civilization development which throughout the entire Archaic age,especially the brilliant colonial movement, to fine the answer why the three hundredyears which from the9th-6th century BC, this little island maintained flourisheddevelopment. The Euboean were engaged in setting overseas colonies and tradingactivities, which were second to none in the entire Greek world. This leading modelof development has a certain role of demonstration to the Archaic and Classicalperiod of Greece. I will set from the rise of Euboea civilization, then to the colonialmovement, after the war of the first city-states, called Lalentine War, whichdebilitated the island itself,to found that how these colonial city-states evolved. I willalso argue the reason of establishment of the first batch of Greek colonies, and therelationship of colonies and their mother cities, ties of economics and religious, andthe ending of colonization, trying to explore the close relationship between thecity-state of war and colonial movement, trade activities. Revealed the fact thattremendous impact of the the island to the Greek civilization. Also expect there willbe taken more focus on a single city-state or island,.From the corner part to see thewhole, will provide more research perspective of the Greek history.
