Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorders with Complex Genetic and Environmental Contributors involving several different pathways, all of which manifest into an abnormal neurological phenotype. ASD afflicts an estimated1in150individuals. The phenotype of afflicted individuals is quite heterogeneous, with only a moderate percentage having known genetic or environmental causes. ASD is characterized by abnormal social interactions and communication (both verbal and non-verbal), and the propensity for stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. Having deficient symbolic play ability has already been accepted as the Specific symptom of Children with ASD.This research included three parts, in the first part, through the observation of children with ASD during half a year and according to Leslie’s definition of symbolic play, a experiment based on observation the process of children’s symbolic play for evaluating the symbolic play ability was designed. In the second part, experimental observation with a focus on symbolic play of100ASD children was made. The feature and the influencing factor of symbolic play were discussed based on the outcomes of the experiment. The feasibility of using the outcomes of the experiment to evaluate the integral development of ASD children was discussed in the end of this part. In the third part,3ASD children were chosen to accept two kinds of intervention in another experiment with multiple-baseline design. The following results were found:(1) the age of ASD children as a independent variable has a significant impact on symbolic play ability that rises with the age growing before6year old.(2) the severity of ASD children as a independent variable has a significant impact on symbolic play ability that descends with the severity aggravating.(3) the intervention of ABA has a significant impact on ASD children’s symbolic play ability that rises during the intervention of ABA, but only in a short-term training not exceeding9months.(4) to evaluate the integral development of ASD children by observation of their symbolic play ability is an effective method.(5) the promoting of symbolic play ability during the intervention of DIR is not more than this during the intervention of ABA. (6) the promoting of other-oriented symbolic play ability during the intervention of DIR is not more than this during the intervention of ABA.
