At first, this paper introduces the application of power system stabilizer (PSS) both in domestic and international, at the same time, it points out that PSS is a basic method of enhance damping low frequency oscillation. It also introduces the principle and characteristics of PSS2type which is widely used in the current system. Although it is effective in the typical low frequency oscillation mode (0.1-2.0Hz), but can’t provide effective damping to the ultra-low frequency oscillation (below O.1Hz) which is appear in the special circumstances in the system (such as isolated network system).IEEE proposed the multi-band PSS4B model can provide damp to the ultra-low frequency oscillation. This paper briefly introduces the function principle of PSS4B, how to set and optimize the parameter according to its characteristics. The inhibitory effect of low frequency oscillation of PSS4B is validated by simulation based on Matlab.Due to the complexity of parameter setting and limitations in using PSS4B, this paper presents a new type PSS structure-parallel operation PSS. As like PSS4B, this type also can provide damping to the ultra low frequency oscillation, but parameter setting is simple. The paper introduces how to set and optimize the parameter. The inhibitory effect of low frequency oscillation is validated by the simulation resultsThe paper provides suggestions of the parameters of PSS4B and new parallel operation PSS tuning, and theoretical basis of the practical field-testing.
