Interpretation Of The Postmodernist Construction Views Of The Four Masters "Architecture Four Elements" Theory

The modernist architectural theory still plays an important role in today’s practice.But in its beginning, Semper theory had affected a large group of Europeanmodernist architects, and this didn’t be taken seriously by the academia till today.More importantly, Semper redefined the essence of architecture from thecultural‐anthropological view for the first time.Thus,this dissertation will give strictlyanalysis on the four works from the four famed modernist architects by using Sempertheory. We hope this analysis will bring some useful advices and benefits today’sarchitectural practice.This essay starts with two aspects. One is to track the Semper theory. Firstly, theessay gave the explanation of Semper theory and analyzed the relationship betweenthem. Secondly, briefly reviewed the four ancient architectural systems under theframework of the theory, laying the groundwork for analyzing the modernist pieces.Another starts from reviewing the movement of the modernist architecture.Thenanalyzed the methods among the four masters with Semper theory and combedeach features. The outcome of this chapter is prepared for the next study.The third chapter is the main part of this work. Relating to the previous study,each of the four elements from the masterpieces were detached and be carefullyanalyzed. At the end this chapter generalized the main points of the constructivemethods among the four masters.The fourth chapter is a summary. The previous analysis provides us several similarpoints and the differs from the masterpieces, at last, it proposed some questionstowards today’s practice.The aim of this essay lies on comprehending modern architecture throughanother way by using the method that Semper created. This paper wishes Sempermethod enlighten us to think deeper of the core of architecture and benefits thepractices today.
