Traffic flow detection is the basal part of Intelligent transportation System(hereinafter referred to as ITS). It plays an important role in the basis of the highwayconstruction, the urban road construction, and the basic theory of traffic flow research. At present, the scholars, at home and abroad, have gradually paid the attention totraffic flow detection. how the construction of ITS to relieve the increasingly serioustraffic problems has become a research hotspot in the traffic field. This article adoptsthe video-based method to traffic detection and statistics and the following is the mainwork of this article:1. Image Preprocessing:It states several common image binarization method, andproposes a new image binarization method based on Shen filter, then introduces fourbasic operations in the mathematical morphology such as corrosion, expansion, opening operation and closing operation.2. Moving Target Detection: It employs the background difference to find themoving, and then binarization processing, and furthermore, it proposes a techniquewhich is based on gray-scale feature statistic to eliminate the shadow, followed byscanning labeling method to distinguish the diffirent target vehicles.3. Traffic Statistics: this part introduces several kinds of traffic statistics, againproposes a traffic statistics method based on area.4.Using VC++to integrate the construction algorithm for an experiment system, and then for actuel video scene experiment, the result shows that this algorithm hascertain feasibility, it can more accurately detecte every car through the detection area, and at the same time count traffic flow accurately over a period of time.
