A novel modified magnesium hydroxide (MH) flame retardants were successfully prepared in this article. MH and melamine cyanurate (MCA) were mixed with polyamide6, and the fire-retardant properties, mechanical properties, heat performance and the flame retardant mechanism were studied.Firstly, SA/CaSt-modified MH particles were synthesized by surface modification with SA/CaSt as complex surface modifiers. The optimum ratio of SA/CaSt was1:2, which was confirmed by water contact angle and sedimentation volume experiments. Surface modification results were evaluated by FTIR, XRD and SEM, then SA/CaSt-modified MH/PA6was also tested. The results indicated that the complex modified samples exhibited good dispersion and crystal lattice.Secondly, the flame-retarded PA6was prepared by extruder and injection molding machine using SA/CaSt-modified MH and MCA as flame retardants. The effect of the mixture on physical property, heat-resistant quality, flame retardance was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the obtained physical property was the best when the ratio of SA/CaSt-modified MH/MCA was1:1, while the synergetic effect of flame retardants could decrease the burning of composites, and the drippings in flames.Thirdly, the flower-like modified MH was synthesized with Zr801as the surface modifiers. Surface modification results were evaluated by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG, water contact angle and sedimentation volume experiments. The results indicated that the flower-like modified samples exhibited better dispersion and crystal lattice. Moreover, another flame-retarded PA6prepared by extruder and injection molding machine using flower-like modified MH and MCA as flame retardants was also investigated. The results indicated that when the ratio reached a certain percentage, the synergetic effect of flame retardants could depress the burning of composites, and the drippings in flames, while the physical property was the best.
