The object of this study is an air drum shall be designed as an unfired pressure vessel. The purpose of the study is of assessing the stress and intensity in the discontinuous zone of the air inlet and the shell. In the design and assessment of pressure equipment, Design by Rules is still the the most frequently used technology, its reliability is quite high on assessment of elastic failure of the pressure vessel. But as the pressure vessels is developing to high pressure, high parameters, the use of high strength material, it will produce complex state of stress distribution in discontinuous zones when the pressure vessels is by the role of internal pressures and external loads, with the traditional state of conventional design method to analyze the stress distribution has not meet the needs of users. In recent years, the progress of the design specifications of chemical containers is the appearance and application of some new specifications. These new specifications include analysis and design specifications, fatigue design specifications, brittle fracture prevention design specifications, creep of high temperature vessels design specification and so on. Analysis and design specifications is the more ripe method among these. Its main idea is classifying the stress in discontinuous zone of pressure vessels for different kinds of stress using different design criteria to check. The main job of the paper is assessing the stress and intensity of local stress with using different methods for analysis and comparison, and the key point of it is using FEM to having a detailed analysis of field of stress. On the research methods, the methods of WRC and FEM will be used. WRC is a theoretical calculation method for the stress calculation of discontinuous zones, the method is combined with the results of the theory and experience and has a high accuracy. The FEM is a kind of approximation method, Its accuracy has been greatly improved with the developing of the computer technology. In this paper, assessing the stress and intensity in the discontinuous zone of the air inlet and the shell and concluding the method of assessments will be on the basis of the two methods.
