With the development of modern science and technology and industrial automation production requirements, welding robot has attracted more and more attention with its unique advantages. Now it has been widely used in automotive, shipbuilding, aerospace and many other areas. One of the key technologies of welding robot is the design of drive system. With the maturity of related technologies, PMSM has become the most widely used motor in the drive system of welding robot because it has many features like simple structure, easy maintenance, high performance control can be achieved and so on.Based on the premise of full understanding of the welding robot and its drive technology development background and current situation, access to a large literature, acquire the relevant knowledge used in the design. This paper describes the vector control theory and SVPWM technology for generating a drive waveform. These are ready for the work of drive system. This paper presents the overall design of the drive system through analyzing the welding robot drive system requirements and technical indicators, based on of hardware design. For security and stability considerations, the drive system is divided into three separate hardware board, and signals are transmitted between the circuit board through wires or cables. Control board is the core of the whole system, responsible for implementing the control algorithm, producing the desired PWM waveform, in response to a variety of fault signal as well as communication with the host computer. Driver board is primarily responsible for enlarging PWM waveform and transporting various detection signals after being conditioned. Inverter converts the DC power into AC for PMSM. Finally, software for the drive system is designed based on the drive system design goals and the corresponding control theory.A large number of tests and experiments are completed in order to test the basic functions of the welding robot drive system’s hardware and software. Test results show that the drive system designed can operate reliably, achieve the function of each part and meet the requirements of various parameters...
