The current GIS has entered the era of service as the main characteristics of spatialinformation sharing, at present most of the map services improve the response capability of thesystem through the server caches tile map. However, various options define the interface invarious ways. It is difficult to compatible with each other, which brings complexity for the clientto access various of tile map services. In order to unify the interface of the tile map services,improve the service performance of system and enhance the experience of the client user, thispaper follows the OGC WMTS specification and carries on research by introducing therepresentational state transfer (REST) architecture style into the tile map services.First of all, the paper elaborates the related technology of tile map, analyses the algorithm ofcutting and generating tiles, and analyses directory organization of storaging and managingtiles.It studies dynamic updating mechanism of the tile map caches and prefetches the tile mapsby using the client caching mechanism.Secondly, the paper studies the resources of the Web Map Tile Services, and realizes RESTstyle transformation on three important interfaces which provides Web Map Tile Services byfollowing the WMTS specification at the technical level of obtaining services. Then, it designs aprototype system of Web Map Tile Services which is composed of client presentation layer,service layer and data storage layer based on the REST style, and illustrates the functions of eachpart of the system and the working process of the system in detail.Finally, the paper builds a prototype system of Web Map Tile Services using open sourcesoftware, and experimentally tests the system of Web Map Tile Services, it has proved theperformance advantage of the REST style tile map service.The research results show that the REST style tile map Web service may enable relievingnetwork transmission load, speeding up the response speed, enhancing the user experience for theclient. It is advantageous to the reasonable deployment and application of geographic informationservices. It has a certain reference value for the approach way and efficiency improvement ofgeographic information sharing.
