Under the background of new-type urbanization, farmers’ centralized residence and ruraltransformation are realistic subjects faced by regional development. Centralized residence ismaking farmers who scatter in villages live in apartments and new-type community. It willchange the spatial structure of urban-rural and farmers’ life style by the transformation of livingway. Promoting the centralized residence of farmers is good to use land intensively, equalization of public infrastructure and peasants’ citizenization, which is also in accordancewith new-type urbanization’ topic——intensive, efficient and the integration. This article is inducted by the new-type urbanization theory. On the basis of existing studyabout farmers’ centralized residence, it treats centralized pattern of Shanghai, Suzhou andJiaxing as objects. What’s more, by the means of literature review, case study and comparativeanalysis, it attempts to achieve the following research purpose:1、regard Shanghai, Suzhou,Jiaxing concentrated living practice patterns as cases, analyse how the operation path shapes, what kind of results were obtained and what questions were lead to. Then try to make theirsimilarities and differences out by comparing, and explain the reasons and mechanism whichwere involved in the similarities and differences.2、on the basis of above, come to generalconclusions about the centralized residence, try to put forward a kind of optimal centralizedliving method which can not only meet the needs of government and farmers’ economicinterests, help to achieve goals involving the intensive using of land, industrialization, urbanization, integration of urban and rural, but also be able to take into account the interests ofthe community and ecological interests; not only can protect farmers’ interests of the short-termasset, but also maintain their sustainable living.Clarifying complicated concentrated settlement patterns to three theoretical models—— “fully urbanization “type,"semi-urbanization" type and "village transformation" type andproviding the appropriate classification criteria; In combination of existing research, identifythe better mode of centralized living mode by comparative analysis are the main innovations liein this article. As follows is the logic: put forward clear problems by literature reviewing, thento understand and analyze problems through case studies, at last, solve problems or to ask newquestions on reference of the related theory and practice study. This article defines farmers’ centralized residence as spontaneous practice, which originatedin developed coastal areas on the purpose of using land intensively. Then it evolved intogovernment-led urbanization movement involving land, capital, migration and urban-ruralsocial change under the framework of the existing land system, and the existing urban-ruralland use and urbanization characteristics were taken into consideration. Through case studies, this article also intends to reflect on the existing centralized living practice, tendency to landfinance, enforcing farmers to go upstairs, keen on the number and scale of urbanization havemade the urbanization movement as a" predatory "activity. Thus, to live together or not, tochose the right way of centralization will affect the pattern and prospects of China’surbanization.
