The palace examination plays an important role in the imperial history. It is always the focus of attention in the academic history. The palace examination appeared in the Tang Dynasty for the first time, but it was formally established in the Song Dynasty. Thus, the research on the Song Dynasty palace examination has a great significance for in-depth study of the examination system in the Song Dynasty.This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction. It introduced the reasons for writing, contents and ways of research, as well as comprehensive reviews of relevant research results. The second chapter discussed the basic situation of the palace examination in the Tang Dynasty and its development in the Song Dynasty. With the imperial examinations become more mature, the palace examination appeared in the Tang Dynasty. Since the Queen Wu ZeTian hold the palace examination for the first time, the Tang Dynasty has held the nineteen times test. However, the palace examination in the Tang Dynasty did not institutionalized. It was accompanied with the randomness, limited impact characteristics. The third chapter talked about the palace examination system in the Song Dynasty, including examination time, place, examination officer, candidates, examination way and official division. Through the analysis of these contents can be concluded that, as the palace examination system more perfect, Song Dynasty’s enrollment scale is more and more big. In the southern Song Dynasty later period, the enrollment scale number is more than the test number. It led to a fall grant official level in Song Dynasty, just because of the narrowing of the territory and the enlargement of enrollment scale. The fourth chapter talked about the the content of Song Dynasty palace examination, including examination paper and answer paper. On the one hand, the questions and answers reflected the interaction between the emperor and the intellectuals; on the other hand, although there is a close system, the results are still restricted by the emperor subjective willingness. The fifth chapter discussed the characteristic and impact of the Song Dynasty palace examination system. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, to sum up all of the paper.
