Samuel Selvon (1923-1994) is a great pioneer in Creole literature. His writing in theMoses trilogy is very representative because of his preoccupation with issues of identityand culture. The Lonely Londoners, published in1956, and Moses Ascending, published in1975, are two of them. These two books telling Creole immigrants’ story have beenrecognized as a great masterpiece in Caribbean literature, which have a far-reachinginfluence on postcolonial literature. This thesis attempts to employ Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity to illustrate theCreoles’ struggle against colonization and the construction of hybridity. The thesis consistsof five chapters, with three chapters set between the introduction and the conclusion.Chapter One is Introduction, which presents a short introduction to the author SamuelSelvon, his two works, the theoretical framework and the layout of the thesis. Chapter Twodepicts the process of the Creoles’ struggle against colonization in political civilization. Inthe aspect of politics, the Creoles experience the process from unawareness of politics topursuing their political dream. They attempt to construct their own political system on thebasis of the British mode. Chapter Three illustrates the hybridization in economic activities. In the aspect of economy, the Creoles gradually walk out of the economic dilemma afterthe phase of attachment and begin to develop their own economic activities. Chapter Fourelaborates on the hybridization in cultural identity. In the aspect of cultural identity, theCreoles change their original identity and begin to assimilate into London society andgradually form a new hybrid identity. Chapter Five is Conclusion. Based on the aboveanalyses, the thesis draws the conclusion that different cultures can influence eachother. The effective way to realize decolonization is the construction of hybridity.
