The Influence Of Political And Cultural Factors On English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting From Skopos Theory

In recent years, the Press Conference as the last part of the "Two Sessions," plays an important role. The interpreter, as the link between speaker and journalists from all over the world, also draw high attention from the public. Because interpreter in the Press Conference is appointed by the government, the professional quality of the interpreter is also confirmed by the government. Therefore, the translation of the interpreter in consecutive interpreting is the model and sample of the practitioners during their study of interpreting.This paper is one of Research Paper to analyze the consecutive interpreting from the perspective of third party. The author uses the2012"Two Sessions" Press Conference as the case for the whole process of consecutive interpreting, and choose the typical examples to combine them with the "Skopos Theory", and then to have a further analysis in the perspective of influences factors in political (such as: interpreter, corpus and target language) and cultural (such as:the difference of. language and thinking model) sides.During the process of analyzing, the author closely combined the three principles of "Skopos Theory"(Skopos Rule, Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule) with the case, and elaborate how the interpreter apply these rules flexibly during the process of interpreting, so as to achieve the effect which is required by the host. At the same time, the author listed the difficulties in the process of interpreting, such as:the translation of Classic Chinese Poetry, figures, sensitive problem and proper noun. The author tried to find out the strategies to solve these problems.After the case study with the use of "Skopos Theory", we can arrive at the conclusions that:Firstly, as a member of the social society, everything that we do is associated with the factors of "communicative function" and "Skopos". It is the same with the interpreter, what he or she did in the process of consecutive interpreting is constrained by the purpose which is under the control of the government. Secondly, the interpreter who is responsible for the consecutive interpreting during the "Two Sessions" press conference is influenced by political factors. Thus, the target language which produced by the interpreter also has the political factors. At the same time, the "Coherence"(that is:intra-textual coherence) and the "Fidelity"(that is:inter-textual coherence) will be affected by the differences of accent and thinking model.At last, pre-interpreting preparation is very necessary and important, because Premier Wen Jiabao likes to use Classic Chinese Poetry in his speech and this can be found in Premier Wen’s past speeches.
