Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) is a famous American writer of the twentieth centurywho enjoys a high literary reputation in the world. Hemingway’s works cover a wide range ofsubjects, rich contents and broad vision. From the early work In Our Time to the late workThe Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway’s works were set in the context of aliens, besides hecreated some famous foreign images and alien images. In his early writing period from1925to1938, he created the Indian novels subsequently, including a novelette and six short works.The works contain Hemingway’s thinking about the war and his reflection on the modernsociety, representing the writer’s early thought tendency. In Hemingway’s Indian subjectswriting, he used the writing method of realism to restore the real appearance ofAmerican Indian nation, depicting rich images of Indians. The depiction of Indian tough guylaid the foundation for the late tough guy image formation. Hemingway’s works have aprofound effect on both America literature and world literature. His early works on Indian hasa very important status in the study of Hemingway.This thesis is divided into five parts:Introduction introduces Hemingway’s position in the history of literature and reviewsthe research situation of Hemingway and his works at home and abroad, pointing out thevalue and significance of Hemingway’s early creation about Indian subject writing.The first chapter analyses the cultural background of Hemingway’s Indian subjectwriting, discussing from two main aspects: the writer’s memory of Indian culture andAmerican modern context.The second chapter mainly inspects the content of Indian subject writing. First hedescribed the natural state of Indian survival faithfully, showing their characteristics of beingin harmony with nature and the philosophy of plain and peaceful survival. Secondhe reflected the cultural dilemma in Indian under the background of industrial civilization,manifesting as the marginal position of the Indian nation and the erosion process of themodern civilization to Indian traditional culture.The third chapter respectively reveals the uniqueness of Hemingway’s Indian’s writing and cultural implication. Uniqueness is reflected in Hemingway’s insistence on the principleof serious realism creation, despite historical prejudice, restoring the true face of Indians. Thecultural connotation of Hemingway’s Indian’s writing embodied in the breakthrough of racialand ethnic boundaries, giving humanitarian care for Indian minority and promoting culturaldialogue based on multivariate vision.The conclusion summarizes the main ideas of the thesis: Hemingway’s writing onIndian reveals that he tried to break the shackles of racism and paid close attention to thedevelopment of the minority nationality. He depicted the heterogeneous culture with apositive attitude. In the construction of the other culture, he cared about the developmentof his own culture, which conveys the exploration of human fate and the concern andreflection of modern culture.
