John Milton Cage (1912-1992) is an American composer. As one of the mostinfluential composers in the20th Century, his composition and musical ideas stronglyimpact the western music tradition and expand the boundaries of music art. In depthstudy of his works and music ideals not only deepen our cognition to the westernmusic of the20th century,but also have the positive significance for further exploringthe music art developmentBased on John Cage’s life experiences and compositions, this paper analyses hisimportant works and ideals in his life. With John Cage as the focus, this paper alsoobserves changes of western music of the20th century, and reflects on some problemsof Historiography.As shown in Chapter1, John Cage’s compositions style is divided into4periods:early experience and composition,percussion and prepared piano,fresh ideal, andfinal period. His important works in his life are analyzed. In the second chapter, theauthor puts forward some problems such as comment on aspects of reception,historiography raised by John Cage’s Compositions, the pioneering of John Cage andwhy John Cage is unique. Further research is needed to explore John Cage’s musiccreation.
