Chinese Idioms In Chinese-to-English Simultaneous Interpretation And Coping Strategies

This paper explores the influences of Chinese idioms in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation (SI) based on Daniel Gile’s "Effort Model", and interpreters’ coping strategies.In the first part, Daniel Gile’s "Effort Model", the problem trigger and failure sequences are introduced to provide theoretical support for analyzing the influence of Chinese idioms in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation. The definition and characteristics of Chinese idioms are explained. Some analytical results of Chinese idioms in translation and interpretation are used as references.The second part is empirical research, in which the performances of six simultaneous interpreters are evaluated to examine the influence of Chinese idioms in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation and coping strategies.The paper concludes that Chinese idioms in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation constitutes a problem trigger, and influence the quality of interpretation. Coping strategies are ranked from the most frequently used to the least as follows: summary, explanation, omission and fixed use.
