Ballroom dance is from the West, originated from ancient folk dance. Experiencing the evolution process from couple dance, lap dance, and contra dance to group dance, it has become nowadays’popular social dance. International standard ballroom dancing was introduced to China in the1930s. According to an investigation, more than half of the fourteen sports institutions in our country have had ballroom dance courses. It is a sport which combines physical education, music and dance. It haven’t been a long time that ballroom dance being introduced into university. Through the writer’s research it shows that teachers use the traditional teaching methods, teaching in big class and teaching basic movements and routines, in most universities. In traditional teaching, it is the teacher who teaches the students during all the teaching and learning process with the same teaching method for both boys and girls. The teachers focus on the content in the teaching plans, and there is no differences in the teaching for all the students. Teachers are the leading factor in the process. This study is for studying the ballroom dance teaching methods based on different genders. Before doing the experiments, theory knowledge were collected; students and teachers were interviewed. These are all for experiments preparation. Teaching experiments are done in two classes:the comparing class and experimental class. Traditional teaching methods are used in comparing class. In experimental class, teaching methods are improved from the roots of psychological barrier, which are Graphics Memory Method, Command Method, Gender Grouping Method and Male-Male, Female-Female Hand-in-Hand Practice Method. Through teaching experiments, according to data comparing, integrating and analyzing, the research results shows the ballroom dance skill marks of experimental class students’are higher than comparing class students which were taught by traditional methods. This study shows:1. The teaching methods based on gender in this study are workable and at the same time very practicable. In warm-up practice, there is exercise accordingly. In basic movements learning, Graphics Memory Method and Command Method are used. In routine exercise, Gender Grouping Method and Male-Male, Female-Female Hand-in-Hand Practice Method are used.2. The experimental class studying situation is obviously better than comparing class. It means that teaching methods based on gender play great role in stimulating and enhancing students’ learning motivation and efficiency3. Using the teaching methods based on gender differences in experimental class showed better teaching results and can improve the learning efficiency. In future study, there should be deeper research in ballroom dance teaching based on gender differences. This thesis is just a beginning. It is impossible that the study in this field can be finished by one person. In the future there should be more research of this aspect and more effects of other scholars.
