Common Modal Verbs Of Honghu Dialect

Honghu dialect belongs to the Wu-Tian dialect of Southwest Mandarin.Compared to the southern dialects, Honghu dialect has a relatively small number of modal verbs, and the usage of many modal verbs of Honghu dialect is similar to their correspondent of Putonghua. However, as a result of the influence of the historical event "enlarge the population of Hubei and Hunan from Jiangxi", Honghu dialect remains a little trace of Gan dialect, which has its expression in speech,vocabulary and grammer.Thus,modal verbs of Honghu dialect has many other usages,which are obvious different from Putonghua.The paper selects four modal verbs "lie","luo","ba","la",which are the most representative modal verbs of Honghu dialect. Using the method of describing and the thought of "breaking the whole into parts".That is disintegrating their complex usages into many single simple usages,and then describing and researching them clearly and comprehensively.Trying my best to display them completely.The charactristics of the four modal verbs are:Firstly,each modal verbs has many different usages and meaning,each usage has many different meaning,and each meaning in different usages has subtle differences.Second,different usages of different small categories,even across modal verbs,has a little entangling in meaning. When coping with this issue,the paper analyses these entangled small categories carefully and researches their similarities and differences in order to describe these four modal verbs clearly.Finally,each modal verb of the four has very subtle differences in speech according to its usage and meaning.Its major forms of expression are light and heavy sound,long and short sound,and tone pitch.The paper describes these subtle differences as clearly as possible in order to deepen readers’ understanding.The paper has six parts:The first is the forward,which introduces the basic outlook of Honghu dialect and Honghu area as well as the present research situation about dialect and modal verbs of science community nowadays.In addition,it explains the modal verbs of the paper simplely.The second,third forth and fifith describe "lie","luo","ba","la" respectively.The paper breaks up each modal verb into four categories according to the criterion of "state""exclamation""question""imperative" And each category is broke up into small categories,with this method can describe the four modal verbs overall and clearly.The sixth is postscript.This part sums up the arguments in the paper and puts forward further issues which are to be researched.
