Currently, there is a statement among the Western art world that “Easel painting is dying!” Bynow it’s only more than100years since the oil painting art was introduced into China. Abovestatement has aroused quite amount of confinement and sense of loss among Chinese oil painting artworld in recent years. However, as oil painting art has been affected greatly by Chinese culturalbackground and social conditions under Chinese cultural environment since the introduction, it hasbeen developed along the direction of art localization. Combined with local arts, the oil painting art inChinese has exploited bigger growing and developing space. During the process of the localization ofoil painting, an amount of artists were cultivated by Chinese government at early stage of People’sRepublic of China. These artists created a new phase of art drawing history with deep patriotic zeal andthe duty of serving for socialist society. The representative figures of these artists are: Gongliu Luo,Xiwen Dong, Jianjun Zhan, Naizheng Zhu and Shanshi Quan, et at. These artists had strong sense ofmission for developing the oil painting of new China due to their experiences of socialistic arteducation, deep touch with workers, peasants and soldiers and the ablution of Weltanschauungreformation. By rigid training of basic drawing, some of them contributed a lot for the construction ofChinese Arts&Grafts and the development of art journals. Others continued their oil painting creation.Although they became old persons at the beginning of21st century during which Chinese economicdeveloped rapidly, they persisted their artistic view and oil painting creation activities.Among them, Dahu Qing is such a local painter. He insists on oil painting creation for a long timebased on his passion for oil painting art. Qing regards the local culture of his hometown as the sourceand persists the popular art language as his expression form. He pursues the goal of popular aesthetictaste as his art expression and displays the Chinese native culture and arts in simple and sincere way tolook for the developing path of Chinese oil painting. In this thesis, I’d like to discuss the drawing art ofDahu Qing, who is one of cultivated painters since the establishment of New China. My intention is totrack the growing trace of Chinese local oil painters and Chinese oil painting development of NewChina by taking Dahu Qing as an example. I also want to discuss art value of oil painting by localpainters after the fusion of Western oil painting and Chinese culture and arts since the establishment ofNew China. In this way I try to draw some experience for the development of localization of Chineseoil painting. In this thesis, I’ll take the drawing art style of Dahu Qing as the research object. By visiting thepainter, collecting and reorganizing his works to study Dahu Qing’s drawing career and his art style, discussing the transition and development of Chinese local painters on the nationality of oil painting infollowing three aspects. First, based on the social culture background of1950s and1960s in whichDahu Qing lived, I try to clean up the developing path of oil painting at the early stage of New China.Second, by studying the drawing styles and art languages of three drawing developing stages of DahuQing, I will display the formation of nationality in oil painting of the painter. Third, by discussing theThought of Dahu Qing’s drawing arts, I will show the contribution of Chinese local painters on thenationality of oil painting.
