| Folk song in many of the ethnics was composed using the method of improvising, improvisational music is yet a very important element in Indian music and Persian music nowadays. However, the value of improvised music was being denied by western classical music’s scholars who believes that improvisational music is lack in normativity due to the properties of freedom in improvised music. In fact, self-limitation and freedom has a mutual restraint in the art of improvisation, this article is discuss about the relationship in between and the role in improvisational music based on the practical experience and studies result of the author.The different views of vary scholars on the definition of improvisational music is discussed and clarified in the first part of this article. Besides, the theory of Bruno Nettl and Stephan Blum is cited to refute the prejudice and critics on improvisational music. In Second section, the practicality of applying absolute freedom and absolute self-limitation in learning process of musical improvisation are discussed separately. At the end of second part, the relationship between freedom and self-limitation in learning process of musical improvisation is discussed. Thirdly, the comparison of freedom and self-limitations in solo improvisation and group improvisation is being mentioned, Matthew Bourne’s performance in Xiamen as an example.On the other hand, the limitations in motive-given improvising performance is also discussed in this section. |
