Based on the theory of Functional Stylistics, with Halliday’s systemic functional grammar as analysis tool, this thesis does close reading of Meng Xi Bi Tan and its English version, carries out a detailed text analysis of the specific cases in the text with the theory of Register, and indicates that foregrounding is of guiding significance to the English translation practice of ancient Chinese works, as well as the importance of Tenor in these activities. When translating the ancient Chinese works into other languages, translators should give equal weight to the maintenance of style and the transformation of information. In addition, while reviewing the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Grammar and of Systemic Functional Stylistics, this thesis proposes the establishment of a standard translation process to increase the likelihood of success in translation practice.
