The Points, Lines And Surfaces In The Paintings Of Wu Guanzhong

Wu Guanzhong had made outstanding contributions to the rooting of oil painting in China. Under the profound influence of Chinese traditional culture and Western painting, Wu devoted his life to the nationalization of oil painting and the modernization of Chinese painting, in which he had formed its own distinctive artistic features. He loves the beauty in form and China artistic conception, and expresses them with points, lines and surfaces. He refines points, lines, and surfaces in paintings, sublimates them and composes them to the painting, forming a unique sense of form and modern. Points, lines and surfaces are important means and the decisive factor of Wu’s painting. Meanwhile, points, lines and surfaces have become the soul of painting of Wu Guanzhong. Analyzing Wu’s works of art will help us to make new discoveries and interpretations of his artistic thought, and to apply to today’s art creation. This thesis analyzes the oil paintings of Wu Guanzhong. Firstly, the thesis introduces the forming and evolving of the points, lines and surfaces in oil paintings of Wu Guanzhong. Then, focusing on the analysis of Wu Guanzhong’s paintings, we elaborate the characteristics of his points, lines and surfaces. That is, the points are clean, light and elegant, lines are graceful and lovely, and surfaces are virtual and real. Finally, we discuss the value and enlightenment of his points, lines and surfaces to us.
