Stracegy Of E-C Back Translation Of Works By Chinese Immigrant Writers

Chinese Leadership is co-authored by Harold Chee and Barbara Xiaoyu Wang who are both program directors at Ashridge Business School. Although this book is written in English, the translation of this book is merely about intra-cultural translation, i.e., the translation between two different languages but within the same culture. Therefore, the translation of Chinese Leadership can be classified as Chinese translation of immigrant literature. Translation of this book is different from that of ordinary English works of fiction or non-fiction, since this kind of translation involves back translation, namely, translation of Chinese specific terms or phrases back into Chinese for Chinese readers who share the same mother tongue with the translator and the author. Since this book elaborates on the influence of the traditional Chinese philosophies on the birth and development of Chinese leadership and cites proverbs and quotations by famous people through the ages, the translator should search and define names of Chinese persons, places, distinctive cultural concepts, culture-specific words and discourse.Back translation is a special translation strategy the thesis is going to focus on. So far, the translation communities at home and abroad do not have a clear understanding of the significance of this strategy in translation practice and its position in theoretic study of translation. In the21st century when science and technology advances and information explodes, the focus on back translation will not only open a new research field for translation but contribute to the development of translation as a subject. Choosing the second and the third of Chinese Leadership as the translation material, the thesis summarized four principles of back translation, namely, complying with the original forms of expression, analysis before translation and context orientation, paying heed to hidden back translation, and laying emphasis on the cultivation of two-way cultural competence, aiming to provide some reference for other translators in translating English works written by Chinese immigrants.
