A Comparative Study On The Translation Of To The Lighthouse From The Feminist Perspective

Since the1990s, greater significance has been attached to the relation of translation and culture, one representative among this trend being the feminist approach. Evaluating and analyzing translation works from the perspective of feminism has provided a new aspect for translation studies. For the same text, different translators may adopt different translation strategies. These differences reveal feminist awareness which worth researching on.This thesis, from the feminist perspective, compares two translated versions of To the Lighthouse written by Virginia Woolf. These two translated versions are done by Ma Ainong(Female) and Qu Shijing(Male). This thesis analyzes faithfulness, and the subjectivity of the translators and related translation strategies from the perspective of feminism. Also, this thesis provides examples of combinations of faithfulness and translator’s subjectivity.Based on the analysis, this thesis believes that for expressions praising the virtue of women or despising the behavior of men, Ma tends to be more faithful while Qu ignores the praising for women or changes the criticism on men into more modest and positive expressions. From the perspective of translator’s subjectivity, Ma shows greater awareness in altering the text to show virtues of women.
