Metaphor has been studied by many linguists for several centuries. Aristotle is an ancient Greek philosopher, he regards metaphor as a figure of speech. It is an implicit comparison based on analogy principle. This theory has a great affect on metaphor for a long time. Metaphor is a kind of cognitive tool, we use it to perceive the outside world. It also impacts human’s way of thinking and life. The Metaphor We Live by, written by George Lakoff and Johnson, begins the study on metaphor. They put forward a new concept, which is cognitive metaphor. They also believe that the real conceptual embodiment for language is Conceptual Metaphor. Metaphor not only concerns many aspects, for instance, nations, individuals, culture, surroundings and value, but also is a deep structure in our mind. However, Not all of us comprehend and apply metaphor with the same way, it is related with the speaker’s experience and imagination. In the process of metaphor study, Animal is always attracting the attention of many researchers. Animal metaphors are often used in people’s conversations. Under the frame of Conceptual Metaphor, the source domain on animal metaphor is animal itself. The target domain is human or concerned with human’s action. People will use the similarities with animals to express their feelings. This thesis, using George Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, makes a comparative study on Chinese and English animal metaphor, and makes a survey how animal image as the specific source domain are mapped onto the abstract target domain. The main study of this thesis is making a comparative analysis on Chinese and English animal metaphor, and gives some reasons from the perspective of Conceptual Metaphor. Animal image can help us learn about human’s nature and features. At last, some translation methods are put forward in this thesis, which can be applied to translate animal metaphor between the two languages under different surroundings.
