| With the process of reform and opening up and socialistic modernization, engineering concerning foreign affairs are on the increase as well as translation in this field. Translation of engineering has a high demand for preciseness and accuracy. As a special translation work characterized with its professional knowledge, civil engineering English is different from other English text. At the time of the rapid development of technology, it is necessary for us to have a good command of new technology to solve problems. Only the excellent translation can meet the target which is important for company. Not only does accurate translation can provide convenience for engineering procedure, but also can bring huge profit for company.On the basis of the knowledge of semantic translation and communicative translation put forward by Peter Newmark (a very famous translator and scholar), the thesis give a brief introduction of those two theories, and point out that civil engineering English, a special type of English for science and technology, should follow the standards of semantic translation in the first place, and then take communicative translation into consideration.From the study of the case---.the translation of the text including procedure and principles in the construction for tunnel works in mining area II of Taliabu island iron mine project in the Republic of Indonesia. This thesis analyses some characteristics of civil engineering English including characters of words, sentence and text; summarizes some common problems in civil engineering translation including the problems of comprehension, expression and the problems of words and grammar. According to the characters, the thesis proposes seven solutions comprising ways of technical terms translation, amplification and omission, shifting of property of words, adjustment of words order, the use of non-finite verb, ways of passive voice translation, ways of long sentence translation to solve the problems. |
