Hong Ying is a unique female writer on the contemporary literary scene. She won her overnight attention by her first novel. Her autobiographical novel, the Daughter of River, was strongly controversial when being published. Good Children of Flowers, as the follow-up of the Daughter of River, is supplementary to Hong Ying’s autobiographical writing. By coincidence, Marguerite Duras, well-known for her writing in the world, won the Goncourt Prize of France for her novel, L’amant. After that, Duras published the Lover from North China, focused on the memory of her growing experience and the relationship with the lover. For Hong Ying and Duras, their autobiographical writing became the most representative work, which is worth researching. The thesis attempts to do comparative studies of the river image, exotic lovers, and the narrative art between Hong Ying’s and Duras’s autobiographical writing.The paper tries to study from the analysis and contrast of images, and narrative art. It contrasts Hong Ying’s and Duras’s text, in order to analyze the similarities and differences of their autobiographical writing. In this way, it can find out the root of their similarities and differences to fill the gaps of correlation studies. The paper is divided into the following sections:The Introduction section sorts out the correlation studies of Hong Ying and Duras at home and abroad. It also introduces the significance and creation, expatiating thoughts and research methods of the thesis.Chapter1is mainly to discourse the river world in their autobiographical writing. On the basis of Yangtze and Mekong, Hong Ying’s and Duras’s novel combine with the ocean, water, ship and river banks to build their own literature world. Therefore, it can prove the two writers start from unique perspectives, and step over oriental occidental cultures to show their life experiences by the river image in their novels.The Chapter2mainly discusses the exotic lovers under their autobiographical writing. It finds out that the roots of exotic lover lie in the absence of the two writers role of the father and the shortage of love. It further analyzes the mutual attraction and repulsion from exotic lovers, and the implied factor of human nature. As a result, the comparative studies, which focus on connotative meanings of exotic lovers, can lead to find similarities and differences.The Chapter3mainly investigates narrative art in the autobiographical writing. It discusses narrative perspectives, levels of narration adopted in different works. It further studies the effect by different narrative strategies, so it can obtain the two writers’s narrative features in their autobiographical writing.The epilogue summarizes the main part of the thesis. It presents the puzzles arising from the process of elaborating on the topic, and look into the future of the researches into the two writers’autobiographical writing.
