| With the development of the western theories, the "cultural turn" in the1970s changed the direction of translation studies from the language level to culture level. Since then translators, who had been neglected for a long time, attract the attention of the researchers. More and more scholars are aware of the role of translators played in the translation activity. And the subject position of translators gradually has been established in the translation study. At the same time, many translation theories such as modern hermeneutics, skopos theory, structuralism and the school of manipulation provide theoretical basis for study of translator’s subjectivity. In recent years, the study of translator’s subjectivity is on the increase. The researchers study it from different angles. Many translations can be used as a material to study translator’s subjectivity. Cheng Xiaoqing’s translation of The Naval Treaty in1916is one of them.Cheng Xiaoqing was a writer and translator. Although more and more attention was paid on him, but the study on his translated works is not enough, and the study on translator’s subjectivity of Cheng Xiaoqing is rare. In fact, studies of Cheng Xiaoqing mostly concentrate on his creation of the detective novel Huosang Detect. Therefore, in this paper, the author intends to expand the scope of study of Cheng Xiaoqing and try to analyze translators’ subjectivity in his translation. The translators’ subjectivity is fully reflected in his translation story The Naval Treaty.This thesis introduces the multiple identities of translators in literary translation, and a number of factors influence translator’s subjectivity. The author points out that translator’s subjectivity not only involves the translator’s initiative and creativity but also includes the objective factors which restrict the translator, such as, the readers at the time, the society, the culture and so on. In other words, translator’s subjectivity is the unity of initiative and passiveness. On the basis of the theory, the author of this thesis analyzes Cheng Xiaoqing’s translated work The Naval Treaty from many perspectives, such as translation strategies employed by the translator, deletion and addition of the original text, the translator’s constraints of patronage, ideology and poetics. Through the above analysis, the reasons of the differences between the content of the original and that of the translated work are discovered. And inspirations can be drawn:in literary translation, translators play a key role in the process of translation and also affect the translated work. The various factors that affect translation are also functioned by the translator. In literary translation criticism, the research not only focuses on such internal literary system as language, aesthetic, etc., but also studies the translator’s decisive influence on the translated work in the process of translation. Translator’s subjectivity provides a new perspective for literary translation criticism, for the study of the translation literature and for the study on the relationship and differences between the translated work and the original.The thesis contains five chapters, the first chapter presents the research background and research significance. The second chapter reviews and summarizes the previous studies on translator’s subjectivity, detective fiction translation and Cheng Xiaoqing, etc. Third chapter introduces translator’s subjectivity theory from the multiple identities of the translator in literary translation and a variety of factors influencing translator’s subjectivity. Based on the theory of translator’s subjectivity, the fourth chapter studies Cheng Xiaoping’s translated work The Naval Treaty in1916from macrocosm to microcosm, analyzing the causes of contents’ differences between the translation and the original from social and cultural aspects. The fifth part summarizes the full text. Moreover, the limitations of this study are pointed out and suggestions for future research are also proposed in this chapter. |
