Strategies In Translating Informative Texts From The Perspective Of Translation-Oriented Text Analysis

This dissertation is a report on the translation of Chapter6of the book Applied Mediate Macroeconomics, a textbook written by Kevin. D. Hoover, a professor from the School of Economics of Duke University. This translation project, initiated by China Renmin University Press, was leaded by Professor Jiang, the vice President of School of Economics of Anhui University and my tutor, Professor Yang Ling. It is own to Professor Yang’s confidence that I had the fortune to take part in the project, and it is based on the translation work I finished this very dissertation.The translation of textbooks is generally considered as non-literary translation."The most significant difference between literary work and non-literary work is that the former is imaginary if not totally groundless while the latter is based on fact or what the writer believes to be fact if not totally real." The translation of non-literary works requires more accuracy and has less tolerance for elasticity. It therefore becomes very challenging to recreate all the economic theories in target language.The translation was guided by Christiane Nord’s theory of Text Analysis in Translation. First, the original texts are analyzed from the perspective of translation commission and then corresponding skills are used in the translation.This thesis is altogether composed of four chapters. Chapter one and Chapter two give a brief introduction of the book Applied Mediate Macroeconomics and its author; Chapter three is the kernel of the thesis, showing how the translation is guided by Nord’s theory and how translation skills are used; Chapter four is the conclusion of the thesis.
