The Examination Of The Historical Dramas Creation Since The1990s(1990-2010)

Through a thorough examination of the historical dramas since the1990s (1990-2010), this paper aims to grasp the new appearance and new spirit these plays present and analyze the reasons why they have thrived, the deficiency they have and their future development trend.This paper consists of three parts:preface, main body and conclusion. The main body is divided into four chapters.The first chapter, which gives a general account of the historical dramas created over the last20years, offers a glimpse of their development through an analysis of the number of plays, the subject of creation, the style of creation and creation theories. Playwrights of this period, who focused on freeing rein on their subjectivity and seeking the resonance point for history and reality, were prolific and varied in creation styles."Vivid history dramas" and "new historical dramas" have break through the shackles of traditional concepts of historical dramas, focusing on the discussion of the value of historical dramas as drama.The second chapter, an analysis of the plays of leading playwrights, explores the trends, ideas, characteristics and achievements of historical drama creation through analyzing Zheng Huaixing’s, Luo Huaizhen’s and Li Li’s angles of creation, styles of creation and theme presentation since the1990s.The third chapter explores the new trend and motivation of historical drama creation. The distinct characteristics of this period’s historical drama creation are the emphasis on the reality of history, the dispelling of grand historical accounts, the focus on chance factors of history and the highlight of subjective depiction. There are three points to the motivation of new trends:1) the diverse and popular cultural environment provides soil for the existence of historical drama creation;2) the development of historical drama perspectives and creation theories, especially the gradual recognition of the broad concept of historical dramas, gives aesthetics to historical dramas;3) the improvement of subjectivity on the part of playwrights enhances the thoughtfulness of plays and the re-creation awareness of authors.The fourth chapter points out the problems historical drama creation has and explores strategies for facilitating its development. The main factors restraining the development of historical dramas are the appearance of the inconsistency between their contents and forms, and their neglect of dramatic traditions,"xishuo" historical dramas. This paper proposed that the right strategies for promoting the continuous development of historical dramas should be actively carrying out experiments on "modernization" and "urbanization" and handling the relationship between original and traditional dramas.
