The current study tried to explore the effects of age of acquisition (AOA) in readers with different reading skill on word identification by eye movements.22high skill readers and22low skill readers were selected from juniors as participants and were asked to read the sentences silently at their own rate. The eye movements were monitored as subjects read sentences. After the removal of serious track losses by2high skill readers and2low skill readers, four fixation durations of target words by40subjects were examined to see whether the two groups show different effects of age of acquisition. Results from the analysis indicate that the main effects of AOA are significant in the four fixation durations, which reveals that AOA is independent of word frequency and word familiarity and influences the early and late stage of word identification. And readers of both levels possess the same effects of AOA showing that AOA effects remain stable and lasting. Furthermore, in the current study, there are no significant effects of reading skill and the reasons for it are also provided.
