The Development Of Dalian’s City Sculpture In The Present Environment

Sculpture is an old art form, with its long history. City sculpture, as an independent artform of sculpture, showed its significance in Ancient Greek and Roman times. Inspiring andattracting their audience, sculpture works are widely placed in some squares, churches andpublic places. Based on European city sculpture, Chinese city sculpture gets furtherdevelopment and new innovation. The real development of Chinese city sculpture only hasbeen for a few decades. In1982, the central leaders approved of the establishment of NationalCity Sculpture Program Group, which signed the prosperous beginning of city sculpture inour country. City sculpture is a young form of art for China, and its development onlyoccupied a short period in the long history of city. As a result, the nature of “lack of history”must result in inadequacy of practice and theory in Chinese city sculpture. Compared withlong and splendid history and mature theory of city sculpture in Europe, Chinese citysculpture seems immature somewhat. Practice decides its theory, but theory should go aheadof practice and guide practice as well. Therefore, at present, it is necessary to summarize aseries of theories including: the state of Chinese sculpture before its existence, emergence ofcity sculpture, its situation, future development and the theory considered national and localfeatures. Based on the theories of sculpture in China and other countries, getting fullunderstanding of the development of Chinese city sculpture and Western city sculpture, takingDalian’s unique location, climate, history, culture and city position into consideration, thisthesis will analyze the current situation of Dalian’s city sculpture and find out the profoundproblems, so as to provide the solutions. In addition, the thesis illustrates a new and creativetheory about city sculpture in Dalian, in order to offer a more valuable theory for its futuredevelopment. According to this theory, the significance of this thesis is to promote more andbetter works of city sculpture in future Dalian’ development, in order to take full use of cityspace.
