Under the influence of traditional Chinese philosophical views and the guidance of ancient Chinese painting theory, the color of Chinese painting exhibits distinct folk characteristics different from that of western painting. Although the color of traditional Chinese painting and western painting appear different, they share common rules, both following basic principles of color composition. Even the few strokes of refined Chinese painting follows Bauhaus’s principles of modern coloring. After analyzing these principles, us painting practitioners can apply them to our own painting, without being confined by ancient pattern, to create color that are both modern and accordant with the principles of coloring, thus achieving the combination of eastern and western coloring. This article is aimed to, by analyzing the views and characteristics of eastern and western coloring, explore the differences and similarities of eastern and western coloring and the principles of the use of color. The purpose of studying underlying principles in the use of both eastern and western coloring is to provide a theoretical basis for combining eastern and western coloring in traditional Chinese painting. In the meantime, it urges Chinese painting to maintain its eastern characteristics in this process. In the development of Chinese coloring, with the development of times and the exchange between eastern and western culture, it is inevitable that modern Chinese painting will break the confinement of traditional rules and create colors with modern characteristics.
