In this paper,we analysis kant’s theory of imagination from two editions of“Deduction of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding”.And we explore Kant’sadjustments of the theory of imagination in two editions.Imagination is a bridge tocombine intellectual concepts and emotional intuitive, so kant’s theory of imaginationplays a very important role in Kant’s first critique.Through the combination ofimagination, the form of understanding unify the manifolds of perceptual intuitive toform the representation of an object. The combination of imagination between theintellectual forms and the perceptual material plays an irreplaceable role.Nevertheless, Kant make a different discussion about the theory ofimagination between two editions.First of all, subjective deduction occupies veryimportant position in the first edition.Kant elaborate three folds of synthesis which isthe key issues in the subjective deduction. And even in the objective deduction alsoreflects the ideas of subjective deduction. In the second edition the objectivededuction is important, and most of the deduction is about how the principle ofunderstanding applies to form the representation of an object.Secondly, from thecontent of deduction, we know that the pure understanding and concepts are forms ofknowledge. The forms in logic need transcendental synthetic of imagination in orderto apply itself to manifolds of perceptual intuitive.Visible, in the first edition Kant hasnot get rid of the bondage of formal logic thinking mode.In the second edition, kantrecognise that the prior subject has the ability to synthesize.“I think”is the logicalprecondition of“I am”,the synthetic unity of the manifolds of intuitive is the ground ofthe identity of apperception itself, which form the representation of an object, andkant call it “synthesis intellectualis”.Besides the transcendental synthesis ofimagination no longer appears in the elaboration of the principle of pureapperception. The forms of understanding have the ability to synthesize manifolds toform the representation of an object, kant limited the transcendental synthesis ofimagination as “synthesis speciosa”under the combination through theunderstanding. Thus imagination is limited under the understanding.Althoughimagination is still a bridge to combine intellectual concept and emotionalintuitive.Kant emphasize the original synthetic unity of apperception, the role ofimagination is waked. In addition to discuss the difference between the theory ofimagination in two editions,we focus on the relationship between the principle ofapperception and transcendental synthetic of imagination, hoping to reveal thedifferent role of imagination to form the representations of an object in two editions.
