From these facts we can see thatMai Jia not only has a considerable number of fans among the mass readers and literatureresearch groups, but also get a certain degree of recognition. This also shows that he was notjust the type write or popular writer from some researchers or professionals’ aspect. As isknown to all, there often exists conflicts between the mass readers and elite researchers, themarket and the official discourse in literary aesthetics, appreciation, value tendency and soon, and the contradiction between highbrow and popular literature or art is not rare.Therefore, Mai Jia’s narrative skills are of high represent and reference value for the studyof the contradiction, relation and their respective characteristics between the elite and thepublic, the market and the mainstream discourse.This thesis compares Mai Jia’s novels from the elite and the public culturalbackgrounds, focusing on the narrative art to analyze the narrative mode and narrative skillsof the elite mobilizing the mass reading experience, and summarizes Mai Jia’s conception ofliterature and art and explores the causes. As under the contemporary literary and culturalenvironment, elite and popular cultures are in a parallel and mutual absorption, therefore, theconcrete analysis also displays the mutual infiltration of the two in novel creation under thecontemporary literary and cultural environment. To get an overall research, the object ofstudy in this thesis not only includes his espionage novels but all his novels. The main textis divided into three parts; the introduction presents the reason of selecting this topic, theacademic background, the current academic research status, the innovation of this paper andson on in general. The first chapter focuses on analysis of the narrative methods andtechniques successfully mobilizing the readers’ reading experience in his works, such assetting suspense to create a mysterious atmosphere, showing the legendary life story bychance and coincidence, and using real logic and history can be touched. At the same time, it analyses the narrative techniques successfully building the perceptual experiences from theelite perspective. The second chapter mainly gives a in-depth, rational and objective analysisof Mai Jia’s narrative skills combining the narrative theory popular both in China and theWest, such as image settings, personal perspective and timing, story structure combiningtradition and modernism, and refining, deep, thoughtful as well as personalized language,these features are the focus in the area of literature research, and also the representativeaspects of the elite narrative characteristics in Mai Jia’s works. In addition, it also analyseswhere and why does the popular like these elite elements combining with the readers’reading experiences and the public perspective. The third chapter summarizes the artisticview of Mai Jia’s novels, points out the centrism in his creation, and relates and analyzesthe reasons of Mai Jia’s narrative characteristics from the personal growth, militaryexperience, Chinese and foreign literary and artistic atmosphere, social culture, political andhistorical environment, the identity as film and television maker, and other aspects. Theconclusion introduces the writer’s immature opinions of Mai Jia’s works, points out theareas can be further researched, and expresses some personal feelings about the thoughts,values and other aspects besides the narrative features in his works, in order to prepare forfurther research. |
