With the ever-increasing connections of the world, with China’s gradual integration into the world economic and cultural development, Chinese people have more access to English films nowadays. As an important and indispensable part of a film, the film title is the first bridge that links the film and the audience together. Because of the commerciality of films and cultural differences between China and western countries, the translation of English film titles is not an easy task. In the process of English film title translation, the translator should not only understand the cultural meaning of the English film title correctly, but also pay attention to the purpose and function of the film.This thesis is designed to emphasize the important role of culture in translation of English film titles by combing Skopostheorie, cultural elements and film title translation from Skopostheorie viewpoint. The main purpose of film title is to make the audience accept it and go to the cinema. Therefore, to have a full and completely understanding of the cultural elements in English film titles and choose appropriate strategies to translate them are very important and crucial.This thesis aims to analyze the translation of cultural elements in English film titles from the perspective of Skopostheorie. It first discusses language and culture, features and functions of film titles, it also analyzes the cultural properties in English film titles and cultural elements translation of film titles. Films are the products of commercialization, so the most important function of film titles is the commercial function. So the thesis is from the perspective of Skopostheorie, it makes a brief introduction of Skopostheorie. Because Chinese and western people are from different cultural and social backgrounds, the thesis analyzes strategies of English film title translation from three aspects:retention of cultural elements, modification of cultural elements and reconstruction of cultural elements. The translator can choose to use appropriate translation strategy to translate cultural elements in English film titles, so that the translated film titles can be accepted by the Chinese audience and catch his attention, and finally achieve the purpose of calling up the audience to see the film.
