The Expression Of Ellipsis In Japanese

Omitted expression is a common phenomenon in any language. We often omitthose commonly known parts in conversation to be terse and concise. Separatedonly by a strip of water, there are a lot of similarities in languages of Chinese andJapanese. But because of different language features and cultural backgrounds,there are differences in their expression, and in Japanese the phenomenon ofomitted expression is especially prominent, which widely appears in oralspeaking and literary works. The kind of omitted way which doesn’t conform togrammatical rules is very difficult for Japanese learners from China tounderstand, but Japanese take it for granted and don’t think there’s anythingwrong with it. This kind of expression, which rarely appears in textbooks, isfrequently used and found everywhere in Japanese everyday life, sometimesmaking Japanese learners amazed, embarrassed and confused. Japanese learnersin China often make mistakes in writing and everyday conversation, especially,when Japanese use omitted expression, we often misunderstand them. In order todecrease this phenomenon, on the basis of previous studies and his own thinking,the author of this paper uses a chart of examples to analyze the speaker’spsychological intentions, classification and pragmatic functions of and culturalfactors behind omitted expression. The article also gives some advice on how tocorrectly use Japanese omitted expression. The author hopes to afford some helpto Japanese learners.
