Professional Ethics For Science And Technology Translators

As long as translation activity started to take place, there was certain ethics to guide it, taking a visible or invisible role. In history, there were many disputes on translation ethics, prevailingly are disputes between wen and zhi (simpleness/elegance disputes), debates on name and actuality, disputes between literal translation and free translation and disputes between domestication and foreignization. However, since translation is a kind of activity which is carried out under the influences of many parties, defined standards for translation are not reached yet.For so many years, scholars in this field have been arguing about what are the standards for good translation and translators. Some of them put forward theories such as fidelity, equivalence, loyalty and etc. In2001, Andrew Chesterman, published an essay Proposal for a Hieronymic Oath on "Returns to Ethics" in The Translator, and proposed five models of translation ethics, i.e. ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication, norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment, bringing us new lights on translation ethics for professional translation.Science and technology texts (S&T texts) are a special kind of pragmatic texts, which are quite professional with many technical terms and professional norms, so special requirements are raised to the translators. First, the translators should be familiar with the relative knowledge. Second, the translators should have a great command of the languages and translation skills. Third, because the original texts are properties of the commissioner, the translator should conform to the professional morals.The thesis describes C-E translation of SANY product introduction conducted by the author of this thesis and analyzes how to use translation strategies and methods based on the problems found in the original translation, with reference to Chesterman’s translation ethics, to reach the requirements raised by translation profession. Under the guidance of the ethics of representation, the author uses translation methods such as transformation of word class, word order adjustment, accurate diction, etc. Under the guidance of the ethics of communication, the author uses translation methods such as tense transformation, decomposition expression. Under norm-based ethics, the author uses addition and deletion, negation translation, etc. Moreover, guided by ethics of service and ethics of commitment, the author strives to behave as a professional S&T translator.With problems being found and solved, the author makes a summary on the factors the translators must pay attention to and need to be strengthened, and makes a conclusion on how to improve the translation quality and how to use this thesis to guide the translation of similar texts.
