With the development of linguistics, people are paying more attention to the useof a language instead of just learning its grammar. And communicative competence isof more value nowadays. Language is actually a means of communication. There isno doubt that foreign language learning is to cultivate students’ communicativecompetence of using a foreign language. However, how to apply communicativeapproach fully to English teaching practices in China still remains to be solved. Andoral English teaching is a very important part of English teaching. The improvementof the teaching effects and the cultivation of students’ communicative competence arekeys to oral English teaching.A well-designed test is able to lay positive effects on the aspect of teaching.IELTS is a test that evaluates comprehensively the communicative abilities of thecandidates in English with its emphasis on solving practical issues of listening,reading, writing and speaking by using English as a tool. Therefore, IELTS test is ableto reflect the capability of the candidates in comprehensive applied English. Andspeaking test of IELTS is a productive test with a high level of reliability and validitythat can test a candidate’s language ability directly.This thesis aims to summarize the positive backwash effects from the speakingtest of IELTS on the oral English teaching in universities by analyzing the form,content and the standard of evaluation of the test and the questionnaire on the currentsituation of the IELTS candidates’ opinions towards the oral English teaching in Chinain detail so as to find effective and specific strategies like designing various kinds ofteaching activities and making use of modern teaching equipment and establishing asupervision system of extracurricular speaking exercise for the improvement of thecollege oral English teaching.
