| F. Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940)was a famous novelist in America in the1920s, who was known as the spokesman of "The jazz age", outstanding "chronicler" and "poet laureate" of the Times. Since the1980s, many scholars in our country have studied him and his works. Their research focus on the writer’s life, the theme of his works and the creation of artistic features etc., but little attention to special feelings of Fitzgerald in New York. This article attempts from the perspective of urban research, on the basis of the related theory of "city in the literature", by Fitzgerald and special relationship in New York, and works in New York at many points, to explore the image of New York Fitzgerald created, further discuss the cultural connotation and meaning behind the image.There are five parts, which include three chapters in text.The introduction section:It mainly introduces the author and his era background, research status at home and abroad, this article writing origin associated with "city in the literature" theory research.Chapter One:Fitzgerald’s New York feelings. From the two image that New York is "the city of hope and dreams" and "the city of money and degradation", bonding work and Fitzgerald’s experience, it discusses the two image of New York "angel" and "devil";Section II:The writer’s ideal city. From the city view of the writer, we found Fitzgerald thought the ideal New York was the fusion of urban modernization and rural natural scenery, and sublimation to the material enjoyment and spiritual pursuit, to create a beautiful, harmonious city life.Chapter three:Cultural connotation and meaning of New York image. Section1:New York image and the "America dream". Combined the image of Fitzgerald’s New with cultural background, we dig the cultural connotation behind the image:New York "angels and demons" image is corresponding to the "American dream" pursuit, metamorphism and disillusionment.Section Ⅱ:The meaning of the ideal image of New York. This image provides a blueprint for modern and contemporary city construction and people’s life, depicts a beautiful, harmonious of ideal urban way of life for people of great significance.The conclusion section:As "poet laureate" and "chronicler" in the "Jazz age", Fitzgerald with vivid style of writing, real and vividly recorded the social conditions of New York in the1920s, full of great concern and felling about New York, fairly judged New York, a city of his lifelong devotion. |
