A Research Of C-E Novel Translation Under The Guidance Of Intertextuality

Rice is one of Su Tong’s most noteworthy novels. With imagery and flexible narrative style, Su Tong represents the rise and decline of the rice store family in that turbulent age. The English version of Rice is translated by Professor Goldblatt Howard, and it has got widespread acknowledgment in the western readers and has caused a furious reaction. The success of the English version of Rice in the west owes to Goldblatt Howard, who has accurately transmitted the inherent and profound meaning of the original text to the target language. The western readers were brought to the Chinese southern town and feel the charm of the Chinese literature by Goldblatt Howard’s version.The theory of Intertextuality was put forward by Julia Kristeva firstly, it refers to the relationship between texts. It was Hatim and Mason who first introduced intertextuality theory into translation. They classified intertextual reference into socio-culture object and socio-text practice and analyzed the transformation process of intertextual reference from original text to target text. Hatim and Mason’s theory provides us a new perspective to analyze translation detailed and comprehensive.According to the classification of Hatim and Mason and the writing features of Rice, this thesis will make an analysis about the novel Rice and its English version from imagery and narrative style. It interprets the transformation process of the intertextuality references which rich in cultural connotations from the source language to the target language in literature translation.
