As the core of cultural studies-studies of values have become the core of sociology, psychology and other areas, but it appears much later from the perspective of organizational management. At Mid-1980s, the American scholar Thomas Peters and Robert Waterman considered that the most important task for CEO is to create and maintain a consensus on the value of the entire organization, while this is why some companies succeed but others fail. They summarized the conclusions of the management of seven elements (7s), strategy, structure, systems, personnel, technology, style and shared values when they are responsible for the McKinsey research project. They believed that shared values are the goal of all the members in an organization, and it connects the goals of the employees and the organization. From that on, Value-based Management gradually gets into people’s horizons and become the core of business and academia. Our research found that as a special kind of organizations, the temples are different from the enterprises in the organizational system, operation and other aspects. However, temples are much more successful on Value-based Management. The monks not only have highly consistent values, but also keep great loyalty to the Buddhism and the temples. Based on this view, we choose temples as the case of our study to explore the mechanism of Value-based Management. Then we can find the principles and rules which may be useful for other organizations. This paper mainly uses the method of case study and chooses the Dabei Temple and Dabeigu Temple as the research objects. Focused on Value-based Management, we get inside the temples to obtain the data through depth interviews and observations. Using the grounded theory, we encode the original data and analyze the connections of the three levels of values, values of culture, organizations and individuals. We also compare the difference between monks and lay. We found that the values of Buddhism act on the values of individuals in the early stages and play a limited role. The values of temples act through two ways regulate daily practice and precepts. Compared with the monks, the lay Buddhist are under less management. This found deepens the study of Value-based Management and may be useful for the management of enterprises.
