English, as the world’s major international language, its importance is self-evident. The ultimate goal of language teaching is to enable learners to use the language to communicate with others, however, China’s English teaching situation and effect are not satisfactory. In recent years, several teaching reforms have been implemented in primary and secondary schools, as well as in universities, unfortunately, they have not been able to change the status yet. Many students after years of English learning are still not good at communicating with others in English, which exists in universities and is more serious in vocational colleges. The traditional teacher-centered teaching mode, in which classroom lacks interaction and students have little chance to practice, has been unable to meet the requirements of the modern society for graduates’practical English competence. Interactive teaching is a new foreign language teaching approach for which western scholars have carried out extensive research and achieved fruitful results, but the domestic research about it mostly concentrates on primary and secondary schools and lacks empirical studies in universities, especially in vocational colleges. In the light of theories, including input hypothesis, output hypothesis and interaction hypothesis, this paper applies the interactive teaching approach to vocabulary learning in vocational colleges. In this study, the author conducts an18-week experiment, and70students in two classes from Wuhan Vocational College of Software Engineering participate in the experiment. During the experiment, class one--the experimental group adopts interactive teaching approach while class two as a control group uses the traditional pattern to learn vocabulary. Before and after the experiment, the author takes questionnaires and tests in the two classes correspondingly. For the experimental data, the author analyzes it using SPSS software. The experimental results show that:(1) compared with the traditional teaching mode, interactive teaching approach can better enhance students’learning interest and stimulate students’intrinsic motivation in English learning;(2) interactive teaching can be more effective in promoting students’vocabulary ability.Of course, there are still some limitations about this study, such as the experiment duration is only18weeks and the number of subjects is not enough. The author hopes this study can play a guiding role for vocabulary teaching, and looks forward that English teaching can get further improvement with joint efforts of more scholars and researchers in related fields.
