A Pragmatic Study Of Double-sided Adhesive Tape

The British/American philosopher H. Paul Grice firstly put forward the "Cooperative Principle" to analyze conversations between people from the perspective of pragmatics. Later on, the English linguist Leech came up with the "Politeness Principle" as a complement for Grice’s principle. Some of Chinese linguists have conducted research on the Politeness Principle in the last twenty years, of which Professor Gu Yueguo’s Politeness Principle with Chinese characteristics is the most influential. The conversational analysis of Double-sided Adhesive Tape of this thesis is theoretically based on Gu’s Politeness Principle.With the development of China’s economy, the government has attached much more importance to people’s well-being. There is a variety of factors preventing people from happiness. According to the statistics researchers have collected, the family conflict is one of the important reasons for affecting people’s happiness, in which the contradiction between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law is the most obvious. In the recent years, abundant TV serials about the family ethics centering on the relation between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law have been played on TV and won great popularity. Articles about the analysis of the TV series Double-sided Adhesive Tape are numerous, but most of the research is done from the breakthrough points of the moral aspect, cultural differences, different life ideas between different generations, and few studies are carried on from the perspective of pragmatics. The author tries to apply professor Gu’s Politeness Principle to the analysis of conversations between the main characters, mainly those between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law in the TV series Double-sided Adhesive Tape. Through a detailed analysis of the conversations in the TV series, the author finds that the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law can get along well with each other at first owing to their good conformity to the Politeness Principle when they talk, that they will violate the principle on purpose once contradictions appear when they are familiar with each other, and that the family bliss is greatly destroyed in the end.The author mainly concentrates on the analysis of the conversations between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law in Double-sided Adhesive Tape from the pragmatic aspect with the purpose to help people understand and settle conflicts between them from a new angle, create a happier and more stable family life, and finally establish a more harmonious society.
