A Study Of The Characteristics And Causes Of Chinglish In Chinese-English Translation

The rapid development of English Globalization would eventually bring about English indigenization. That is why there exists a lot of "Englishes", for example, Japanish, Hinglish, Frenglish, and Spanglish and so on. During the process of learning and speaking English by Chinese people, a kind of English with Chinese characteristics which is called Chinglish came into being because of different reasons such as Chinese grammar, physiological reason, psychological reason, social reason, and cultural reason. At the early stage when the concept of "Chinglish" was put forward, scholars made a distinction between "China English" and "Chinglish". They considered that China English is used to express typical Sinicized things and still belongs to Standard English whereas Chinglish is deformed English which is seriously affected by Chinese and Chinese culture.Although Chinglish is not Standard English in the traditional sense, it is popular in China. Chinglish, the wonderfully delicate language exists in every part of our daily life, such as scenic spot introduction, public signs, news publications and English teaching and so on. It is widely and frequently used in Chinese-English translation because it can be understood by most Chinese people. However, it may lead to misunderstandings and even cause serious problems during the process of Chinese-English Translation. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to do research on Chinglish used in Chinese-English translation. The research aims to analyze the characteristics and causes of Chinglish in Chinese-English translation. Besides, some implications are worked out to help avoid Chinglish in Chinese-English translation and English teaching.The thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter one firstly gives a brief account of the objectives of the research. Then it points out the significance of the research. Next, it provides the methodology of the research. Lastly, it presents the general structure of the thesis.Chapter two is the literature review. It firstly makes a brief review of the research on Chinglish, including its definition, origin, users and the distinction between China English and Chinglish. Then, it makes a brief review of the criteria of Chinese-English translation.Chapter three illustrates the characteristics of Chinglish in Chinese-English translation from levels of phonetics, morphology, lexicology, syntax, discourse and culture, so that Chinese English-learners are able to identify Chinglish more easily while translating.Chapter four analyzes the causes of Chinglish. Firstly it studies the causes why Chinglish came into being and became popular from an overall perspective. Then it analyzes the reasons why Chinglish occurs in Chinese-English translation at different linguistic levels so that measures can be made to avoid using Chinglish in Chinese-English translation.Chapter five serves as the conclusion. The thesis ends with major findings of the study. And implications on English teaching are summarized. At last, limitations of the research and suggestions on further research are proposed.
