The thesis deals with the translation assessment in light of relevance theory with many translation examples from the five E-C translation articles on Yeeyan Website as a case study, attempting to establish a translation assessment system from "interlinguistic""textual" and "overall" relevance with translation assessment principle in light of relevance found.Advanced by Sperber&Wilson (1986/1995), relevance theory, as a cognitive pragmatics theory focusing on communication and cognition, interprets the language communications within the language philosophy. Gutt, the student of Wilson, made an effort to pioneer the application of the theory into translation studies. According to Gutt(1989,1991,2000), communicative translation involves a reasoning process closely related to the mechanism of the mind, concerning not only the code but also dynamic reasoning of the dynamic context based on relevance. Thus, translation process is a communicative action, the success of which depends on the optimum cognitive model, i.e. relevance.Considering the requirement for the MTI thesis length, the author chooses five translation articles from Yeeyan website due to the limited space, chooses materials from personally preferred subjects as subject is not one assessment parameter, next chooses texts with interesting titles like those with metaphorical use, from the different preferred subjects as the author would like to undertake the case study with interested texts, then chooses texts covering all the genres from those with interesting titles as genre is one assessment parameter, thus fulfilling the choice of texts. Then, the author identifies the examples to demonstrate the assessment parameters and arranges them based on the parameters rather than texts. With every assessment parameter carrying100, the score for the whole text can be obtained by averaging the scores of all assessment parameters. In the final part, the assessment scores will be given to the chosen materials text by text based on the analyses and the scoring steps in light of relevance theory. The author ranks the translation quality of the five chosen texts according to the scores obtained in4.3in the conclusion, thus fulfilling the case study of translation assessment and demonstrating applicability and feasibility of relevance theory to translation assessment. By this, the author establishes the translation assessment system in light of relevance, putting forward the assessment principle:to resemble the original in every relevant aspect. The author of the thesis hopes that an effective translation assessment case study will be made based on the principles and processes suggested by her.
